Residents at Westminster-Canterbury on Chesapeake Bay
set sail on a weeklong adventure of lively and educational events during “Active Aging Week” September 21-27. Active Aging
Week, an annual wellness event put on by the International Council on Active
Aging (ICAA) is celebrated around the world each year during the last week in
September. This year’s theme, “Let the
Adventure Begin,” featured a wide range of activities from Tai Chi to
table tennis to talks on how to stay healthy as we age.
Westminster-Canterbury staff hosted a kick-off forum
and panel discussion, discussing the importance of wellness at all stages of
life. Tai Chi on the Bay and Tea across America also took place on Monday.
“Play on the Bay” on Wednesday was the flagship
program for Active Aging Week. Though the weather didn’t allow for residents to
be on the water, participants competed in table tennis, corn hole and Wii
bowling. Teams from Westminster-Canterbury along with residents from another local
retirement community enjoyed spending the day together in friendly competition.
The week also featured hiking in First Landing State
Park, an excursion to the Neptune Festival, an annual oceanfront event
celebrating beach life, and lectures on active aging from Dr. Martha Early and
Erin Glace, MSPT.
At the end of the week, nearly 150 residents and
numerous staff members participated in various events and were excited to “let
their adventure begin!”
